Disease Prevention Project Paper
Section 1: Oral Health Disease Prevention
This section will discuss strategies for preventing oral health diseases like dental caries and periodontal disease. An estimated 2.3 billion people suffer from untreated dental caries worldwide, making it one of the most prevalent health conditions globally (World Health Organization, 2022). Prevention is a key strategy for improving oral health outcomes and reducing disease burden.
Primary prevention aims to stop the disease before it ever occurs. For oral health, this involves practices like proper brushing and flossing to remove plaque, limiting sugar intake, and receiving regular dental checkups and cleanings (American Dental Association, 2023).
Secondary prevention targets early detection and intervention to prevent disease progression. Examples for oral health include dental exams to identify signs of gingivitis before it advances to periodontitis. Fluoride varnish applications and sealants can also help prevent dental caries from worsening (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).
Tertiary prevention focuses on stopping or slowing the progression of an already-established disease. For advanced periodontitis, this may involve non-surgical treatments like scaling and root planing followed by regular periodontal maintenance to prevent further bone and tissue loss (American Academy of Periodontology, 2022).
In summary, a multi-pronged approach to disease prevention through primary, secondary, and tertiary strategies can help reduce the burden of oral health diseases at both individual and population levels.
