You will write a short response analysing what managers can do to make their employees’ work more valuable, satisfying and meaningful.
You will compare and contrast your personal opinion with research from a minimum of 3 credible academic articles and two set texts (a TEDtalk and a course reading).

The contemporary workplace is diverse, global and changing. Effective managers understand their personal style of leadership in order to lead and manage their employees. They also need to locate and evaluate information about effective management strategies and apply these to their workplace.
This assignment task will help you develop your skills in research, critical thinking and evaluation. You will also develop your ability to analyse your response to key concepts/issues in a reading and communicate your ideas clearly in a short piece of academic writing.

Step 1: Identify What you CONSIDER is important in management work
Before you start your research write a short paragraph saying what you believe this is. Use the sentence prompts below to help you structure your thoughts.

Step 2: Watch the Ted talk “The way we think about work is broken!” and answer the following questions
1. What makes work satisfying? Barry Schwartz suggests our current way of thinking about work simply ignores intangible values.
2. It’s time to stop thinking of workers as cogs on a wheel. What are the implications for managers’ attitudes towards employees and work? Is this important?
3. What three strategies could managers adapt to change their perceptions of work and to engage their employees more effectively?
4. Why is it important in contemporary workplaces to consider how we engage diverse groups and communicate effectively?

Identify how different generations view the 21st-century workplace.
1. Do different generations communicate in different ways? If so, do managers need to know how to communicate with different generations to make work satisfying?

Step 4: Find at least three credible journal articles
The 3 journal articles must be current (within the past 10 years) and from credible sources. Read the three articles and analyse the key points in them in relation to the questions you have answered above. Evaluate and critique the key findings from these articles on their relevance to modern workplace environments.

Step 6: Complete the INITIAL WRITING piece
The document must be typed in MS Word using Times New Roman font (size 12, 1.5 spacing and justified). The document must include:
An Introduction: Briefly introduce the purpose of writing the analysis piece and the key questions to be addressed in there.
Body paragraphs: Use separate paragraphs to present the information in the piece. The Body of the analysis should show critical thinking based on the research undertaken (with in-text references), the review of what is important about’ managerial style based on research.
Conclusion: The conclusion must briefly summarize the key points in the body paragraphs.
References: Include a separate reference list formatted according to RMIT Harvard style of referencing.

• You must refer to credible articles that have been published within the last 10 years (i.e., 2008 – 2018). Work with your tutor if you are not sure how to locate academic sources and refer to the video on academic sources found on Canvas.
