Description
The first study is a research trial conducted at a local hospital, Duke University Hospital, where neurosurgeons are using recombinant, nonpathogenic polio-rhinovirus to treat grade IV malignant glioma, or glioblastoma, a severe and aggressive brain tumor with a typically-dismal prognosis. However, patients with recurrent glioblastoma enrolled in the clinical trial at the Duke Cancer Institute are seeing a three-year survival rate of 21% in phase 1 of the trial compared to just 4% for the patients undergoing the previously-available standard treatment at Duke. Read more about the trial here (Links to an external site.). The poliovirus therapy obtained “breakthrough therapy designation” in 2016 from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
