PROPOSAL PROJECT – DESCRIPTION The whole proposal must not exceed 5 pages single-spaced 11 pt Arial (1 inch margins) inclusive of all figures (references can exceed 5 pages) and must include the following sections. Keep in mind that the overall goal of the proposal is to apply polymer synthesis principles to advance some area of science where your chosen paper is used as a springboard to define that area. I. Introduction The introduction should start with a clear discussion of the state of the art in the area with an emphasis on your chosen paper and its unique contributions. Here the area of study you propose to explore should be introduced and motivated in this broader context. This section should be 3-5 paragraphs with figures as needed. Note that this is your proposal and therefore, it is your choice and decision as to what are the key features that you want to incorporate into your experimental design. You simply must justify these decisions to your reviewers in the introduction. II. Specific Aims Briefly state the specific aims of the proposal. The purpose of the specific aims is to describe concisely and realistically the goals of the proposed research and summarize the expected outcome(s), including the impact the proposed research will exert on the research fields involved. Your proposal should include 3-5 different specific aims. Specific aims should describe experiments that can actually be conducted to learn something about the system and/or push its development forward. III. Proposed Research This section will expand on each aim in detail. You should have 2-3 paragraphs per specific aim. Your goal for each aim should be to clearly explain (a) the experiment(s) that you plan to conduct, (b) how exactly you will conduct it and (c) what the results will tell you (discuss both positive and negative outcomes). Be sure to reference the literature where appropriate. Use figures to explain concepts efficiently not to simply fill space. IV. Future Implications This section should focus on the future implications of your proposed research. It should not only discuss how the studies that you have outlined could be useful in the specific context, but what are the broader impacts of this work. For example, will the results lead to an improved class of materials? Can the lessons learned be translated to other applications? You have some flexibility here – be imaginative.
