Group Immersion Assignment #1: Appraising Evidence for Applicability to Practice

Guidelines with Grading Rubric

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the scientific underpinnings for nursing practice

through critical appraisal of evidence and its applicability to practice. The ABCD framework will be

utilized to complete the assignment. Please see the below description for each component of the

framework.

Topic: In your assigned groups, choose one of the following PICOT questions, and develop an

annotated bibliography that answers the chosen question. Group members should divide work evenly

amongst themselves.

PICOT #1: Does use of mammography reduce mortality in females diagnosed with breast cancer?

PICOT #2: Does continued education for nurses in the emergency room on sepsis identification and

management reduce mortality in patients diagnosed with sepsis?

PICOT #3: Does early progressive mobilization reduce rates of ventilator acquired pneumonia for

patients with mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit?

PICOT #4: Does use of standardized testing in undergraduate nursing programs increase first-time

pass rates on licensure examinations?

Appraise: Search the literature while identifying and justifying the search method.

Bounce off: Select 2-3 articles from each database and share them with the group.

Compile: From all of the articles found, select the 10 most relevant articles and write the annotated

bibliography.

Disseminate: Share your annotated bibliography with other students in the course by posting it in

the appropriate forum. Discuss how this assignment has answered the PICOT question.

Through this assignment, the student will demonstrate the ability to:

#1: Evaluate evidence based approaches to delivery of leadership services in nursing in applicable

practice settings.

facilitate evaluation of information as it pertains to practice.

and collaborative skills in the development of practice models.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. To complete this assignment, you will need to access to the following databases: PubMed,

CINAHL, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and other resources in the Jay Sexter Library.

These data bases can be accessed through the Touro Online Library http://tun.touro.edu/jay-

sexter-library/

2. The Group Immersion Assignment is worth 300 points and will be graded using the

designated rubric. Grading criteria include quality of content, appropriate citations, use of

Standard English grammar, and overall organization and readability.

3. Create your assignment using a Microsoft Word application. The document should be saved

in a .doc or .docx format.

4. There is no required length, but the submission should be substantive to address all

requirements.

5. APA format is required.

6. Discussion of the scientific underpinnings for nursing practice through critical appraisal and

application of literature to practice should be included.

7. The following sections should be included and denoted through APA section headings in the

paper.

a. Completion of the search strategy form and a list of all chosen articles for each group member (2-3 per database per group member) (Appraise)

b. Meeting minutes reflecting thought process on chosen articles for annotated bibliography (Bounce off)

c. Annotated bibliography of the 10 chosen articles in written form (Compile) d. Submission of posting in appropriate discussion forum (Dissemination)

PREPARING THE ASSIGNMENT:

1. Review Hall & Roussell text, Chapter 18. 2. Perform a scholarly search exploring the chosen PICOT question, specifically looking at how

each article can serve to address the PICOT question. Complete the search strategy form.

3. Develop a list of the chosen articles to share with the group. 4. Synthesize your ideas and choose 10 articles out of all articles found to develop the annotated

bibliography.

5. Using your text and scholarly inquiry as a guide, compile the evidence into a written annotated bibliography.

6. Share your synthesis with other students in the course in the appropriate discussion forum.

*Note: While this is a group assignment, students have the option if they wish to change the

deliverable or the end product on an individual basis. Each individual will submit their own
