Capstone Paper Guidelines

Complete a paper reflecting an analysis of a current issue and trend in nursing management. According to Huber, nurse management activities are complex and challenging.

Introduction

The introduction should reflect a broad context for the problem you are addressing. Give a broad statement of how as a change agent (staff nurse, charge nurse, or supervisor), you would use leadership and management skills/strategies to address the issue you have identified.
How does this issue fit within the QSEN guidelines?

Assessment/Analysis

Complete a thorough analysis and assessment of a current issue in nursing management that a staff nurse, charge nurse, or supervisor would encounter. The problem could have been observed or experienced personally during a clinical rotation, or documented in your textbook or other nursing literature. If so, questions that you may address might be:

Specifically, what aspect of this issue will you focus on? Give an example of what has occurred or what occurs with this issue. How would the staff nurse, charge nurse or supervisor be notified of this issue or assess whether this issue has occurred? Give a detailed description.
What specific individuals or disciplines were or may be involved in the issue?
What do you believe was or may be the underlying cause of the issue?
How does the identified issue affect patient care? Is it urgent or non urgent? Is there a quality of care issue? Should a policy and procedure be developed or implemented? Be specific.
If the issue was something that was personally experienced, using the first person when describing the situation is appropriate. If the issue was not experienced, it must be found and supported by a research article (s) or other scholarly literature; what is the scope of the issue, its occurrence, and potential resolution? Thoroughly document an analysis and assessment of the issue. For example, how would the nurse or supervisor assess the issue? Give as many details as possible so the reader is fully informed of the issue, the implications to patient care, and the profession of nursing.

Planning/Literature Review

Conduct a literature search to find research articles or other types of scholarly articles that addresses the issue. Summarize the issue from the point of view from each author, and include any suggestions for improvement identified from each author. What interventions does the author suggest to address the issue?

In this planning/literature review section, you must have all your references included. (You may use the Huber textbook for up to two (2) references in this section). However, the entire paper should include a minimum of 7 current references (within the past 5 years). A minimum of 2 references must be dated within the past 12 months. For a total of no less than 10. Use only scholarly (peer reviewed) sources.

Intervention

In this section of the paper, propose management interventions for addressing the issue. Will your intervention change a current procedure or policy? If so, how? What is the current procedure or policy regarding the issue you have chosen? Be very specific in developing your interventions making sure to thoroughly respond to the: who, what, when, and how of each intervention. Include rationale and evidenced-based citations for each intervention. Choose a leadership theory, a management style, and a change model to implement your interventions. Devote one paragraph to each intervention. Be sure to identify how your interventions will be implemented and communicated to the nurses.

Evaluation

In this section, develop an evaluation plan. How will you determine whether your intervention has an impact or has changed things? How will you measure the outcomes of the proposed intervention (s)? Be specific. How were outcomes measured in the articles you are citing? Is there a benchmark (national or state standard or goal) to compare the outcome to? If you will use a data collection form or other tool to measure the outcomes, include it in the evaluation section of the paper.

Conclusion- Summarize all sections of the paper in this section.

The paper should be 8-10pp., not including title page and references (no abstract necessary), and double spaced throughout. One point will be deducted for each page over 10. The paper should be written and formatted according to The APA Manual of Style, 7th edition.
