Global Public Health FALL 2018 – Research Paper Assignments
Purpose: The goal of this research paper is to enhance your critical thinking skills in searching and analyzing relevant information about a disease or health condition, and discussing the global impact of that disease or condition based on the metrics that we have discussed in class thus far. Completing this assignment will enable you to develop competencies in the following areas:
- Conduct literature search for the purpose of drafting a manuscript
- Draft Introduction and Literature Review sections of a manuscript
- Acquire proper citation and reference skills used in scholarly works
Knowledge: Completing this assignment will expand your knowledge about your chosen disease/condition regarding the signs and symptoms of the disease, the incubation period and modes of transmission. Furthermore, you will learn about the areas in the world where this disease/condition is more prevalent and the factors that contribute to this disease being endemic. Importantly, you will research treatment methods, progress in search of a vaccine or cure and provide recommendations on how to eradicate or reduce the impact of your chosen disease/conditon.
This knowledge will ultimately prepare you to succeed in any role dealing with global health as you will become familiar with current trends in the field and become familiar with key terminology used in global health.
Task:You are required to author a research-based paper that is a minimum of 10 pages in length (not including cover page or references). This assignment requires a minimum of 10 peer-review sources such as academic journals or publications issues by government sources as the CDC. Websites and non-peer reviewed sources are not acceptable(with the exceptions of .gov; .edu; .org; websites). References within the paper and within the reference list are to be in APA format. The instructor recommends that you include sub-headings throughout the paper to help facilitate the writing process. Select a topic from the list below. Students are not allowed to write on any of the topics used in group presentations during the semester.

- Who is at risk for this disease
- History of all previous out-breaks of this disease
- Areas of the globe where the disease is common/endemic (use VISUAL AIDS)
- What was the mortality rate in previous outbreaks
- What steps could be taken to prevent or mitigate this disease
- Is there any treatment or vaccine for this disease?
- Any progress is search for a treatment or vaccine for this cure
- Any relevant biological or other factors
- As a public health professional what actions would you take to prevent an outbreak of this disease in your community
