· Jayden, a 5-year-old boy, is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). His treatment provider is trying to help him increase eye contact with others.

Jayden being of only five years old, would need positive reinforcement. Everyone with and without disabilities needs approximately eight positives for every negative. Kids with special needs, especially (Jayden) those not doing well in a task, often received the opposite ratio, sometime negative comments to every positive one. His treatment provider can make a column with all the positive increase eye contacts with others by a smile, thumbs up or just saying “good job”. The other column can be for the negative eye contract if the provide was nagging, raising your eyebrow or shaking your head about not having proper eye contact can lead Jayden in the wrong direction.

Using Meta-analysis to gain insight on a multitude of research, focus therapy such as meditation and other self-soothing techniques, as well as potential mood stabilizing medications would be helpful to Trina in her quest to achieve mood stability.

Desmond, 22 and a college student, suffering from GAD and on a quest to decrease his level of worry. I would rely on interpersonal skills to help him develop a positive sense of the future. As we are all aware, college is a high stress period in our lives, regardless of age, and developing a generalized anxiety disorder is considerably more common that we realize. Understanding Desmond’s personal characteristics in combination with population characteristics would be helpful in choosing a treatment plan. Referring to effectiveness research and process-outcome studies, in conjunction with some self-care techniques could help Desmond to rationalize his fears and reduce his worry.

I have to start with emotional intelligence as it applies to treatment for psychological disorders. This is not to suggest that one must be of a particular intelligence level but rather to have the ability to understand and acknowledge that a disorder does, in fact, exist. Self-care is an obvious connection and perhaps the most critical. Being able to rely on self-soothing skills to gain control of your mind and thoughts and to rationalize those thoughts that, if left unchecked can consume us, is a valuable skill and critical to mental health.
