Philosophy in the Late Classical Period would provide lasting contributions to the world as a whole. Examine the philosophers noted on pages 62-63 and pick ONE to use to answer the question from an academic perspective (third person formal point of view, rather than opinion or narrative), why does the word, humanities, have the word, human in it? Hi Kawtar, overall, this is a good start at this essay taking form as a rough draft which we will continue to revise into our final humanities paper. Please work on incorporating at least one paraphrased citation and one direct quote in each supporting paragraph to have five fully developed paragraphs. We are continuously refining the same topic that we began working with in week 3. We broke down how to write an effective paper so we can build it back out and it will be tightly organized. Remember you only have about 500 words (no more than 550 for real!) in the final paper. Good start on pulling the 5 paragraph essay together. Conceptually, please remember that with this rhetoric, you are not informing. The rhetoric for this type of paper is persuasive/argumentative, so make sure you assert one position that you are taking in the thesis statement and that is the position you stay with throughout the paper. The paper is not really about the topic. The paper is about the position and your first 3 key supporting ideas. Hence, a five paragraph paper: Intro that ends with a thesis — topic, point/position, plus 3 key ideas; three supporting paragraphs that directly buttress the key supporting points in that order; and a conclusion that reasserts the thesis but in different words. The end of each intro must be a thesis statement that asserts the topic, point/purpose of the paper, and three key supporting ideas. Then the three supporting points are your supporting paragraphs to prove that they do uphold the purpose/point you are trying to make for the paper.

A five paragraph paper is an intro with a thesis statement as the last sentence of the introductory paragraph; three supporting paragraphs; and a conclusion that restates the thesis and then wraps up the paper as a whole by bringing tying the issues altogether.

You goal will be to have three supporting paragraphs that support the three key ideas in the thesis statement. There may be many others to work on but you just have to pick three and stick to those three ideas. Develop your supporting paragraphs by introducing them, develop your idea with your own analysis, demonstrate through a quote or paraphrased information how that example supports your theory, and then bring it back around to the main idea before you leave the paragraph. Each paragraph is its own organizational subsection.

You want to stay with the third person objective point of view, he she, they, them, individuals, society. It is a shift from the narrative brainstorms we have been doing into a more classic, traditionally structured academic essay.

Make sure to review citations after “quotes”(last name p.) and how you would cite after paraphrased information (last name). All papers must have a proper title page and reference page (not Works Cited or Resources). For APA, it is references. To note, for later essays, the structure of a supporting paragraph for every paper you ever write.

** To avoid intentional or unintentional plagiarism (neither are acceptable), your papers will always be 85%-90% your original ideas, analysis, synthesis of ideas, interpretations, and commentary. 10%-15% of the paper is paraphrased and quoted supports to buttress your ideas and give them context and weight. If you get a similarity index higher than 15-17%, you are in plagiarism territory as you have not attributed sources correctly either in quotes or paraphrased info or you have not provided enough commentary. Commentary quote commentary. Quotes should always be sandwiched by commentary. It is a quote sandwich.

Topic sentence: what is the topic of this paragraph? It will be the topic plus the supporting point from the thesis for this paragraph. Forget the rest for now. your job is to focus on making this key point in the paragraph. Develop your idea with your original ideas. This is the PIE concept. Make your Point. Paraphrased info may happen here in your original commentary because you will mention ideas you read that are not your own and that is where we use paraphrased citations. Illustrate your idea. This is where we use quotes from our readings to support your ideas. A quote does not mean using regular language that you would say anyway and putting quotes around it. For an in-text quote, you have four or less lines to support your ideas. Putting a gratuitous quote in there, “she said don’t touch the blankets” (p.2) [that’s APA; for MLA it would just be (2). That is what we call evidence. Quotes from the text need to really support what you are saying. So, a quote is when your point is that Dee sees the quilts as living cultural history as her ancestors’ blood and sweat is in them {now that is analysis that needs supports to make a complex point about Walker’s story} Thus, my quote [I am just making a point, not pulling a quote here for you]: “Dee was special that way. She saw the quilts as living history, as our ancestors living and breathing with us. That is why they should be hers” (Walker, date, p. 10). Explain. After the quote, you must explain how the quote supports what you were trying to say. Do not over think it. Just explain what Walker meant by that and how it supports your point. Then bring it back to the main idea in the thesis and main point before you move to the next supporting paragraph. Make sure to tie the idea in that paragraph to the main idea. Each paragraph should have a natural tie it together kind of feel.

It always follows this structure.

Conclusions always being with the first sentence of the conclusion being a full restatement of the thesis statement but in entirely different words. Begin with a definitive idea, rather than In conclusion. If you conclude, no reason or need to tell the reader it is the conclusion if it does the job of concluding. Bring the issue back out to the world at large.

So, the introduction is in the conceptual shape of an upside-down triangle: Who what when where why; give background and context and get to the thesis. So, it starts broad and goes narrow to the tip of triangle which is the pointed. directed thesis statement.

In contrast, the conclusion is a regular side up triangle. You begin specific by affirming you proved your point with a Clearly, Obviously, Undoubtedly, Apparently, rather than In conclusion. Then bring the issues back out to the larger issues and themes at hand on an individual, community, society, and global level. So, it starts narrow and ends with a broad base.

This structure never changes although, depending on the length of the paper, the supporting paragraph umbers and how you use them is what makes a paper longer.

Lots of my students say they print these guidance’s out and refer to them later. What we learn I n this class is for every class and good writing is good writing. The structure does not change, even though the subject and content of each paper is different.

The supporting paragraphs in between the introduction and conclusion are supporting paragraphs. This is where the paraphrased and direct quotes from sources goes, as it supports your ideas. There should not be quotes in the conclusion or introduction unless it is a short attention getter. The function of the quotes in the supporting paragraph is to buttress your argument and position. Thus, the 5-paragraph guideline is a guideline because you can have more than three supporting paragraphs and it does not change the structure of the paper. However, if you find yourself going beyond three supporting paragraphs [not for this paper or assignment], then incorporate APA headings to organize your supporting paragraph by categorizing each supporting point. The quotes you use to support your argument should be about the argument, rather than just providing information on the topic. The paper will be 85% to 90% your original thinking about the topic and then 10-15% will be supports in the form of direct quotes and paraphrased information, which will support the argument you are trying to make. Many students do the reverse and it is a mistake. The paper is YOUR paper with your thoughts on the subject supported by 10-15% quotes and paraphrased information.
