Throughout history, technological advancements have appeared for one purpose before finding applications elsewhere that lead to spikes in its usage and development. The internet, for example, was originally developed to share research before becoming a staple of work and entertainment. But technology—new and repurposed—will undoubtedly continue to be a driver of healthcare information. Informaticists often stay tuned to trends to monitor what the next new technology will be or how the next new idea for applying existing technology can benefit outcomes.
In this Discussion, you will reflect on your healthcare organization’s use of technology and offer a technology trend you observe in your environment.
To Prepare:

Consider your healthcare organization’s use of healthcare technologies to manage and distribute information.
Reflect on current and potential future trends, such as use of social media and mobile applications/telehealth, Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled asset tracking, or expert systems/artificial intelligence, and how they may impact nursing practice and healthcare delivery.

Post a brief description of general healthcare technology trends, particularly related to data/information you have observed in use in your healthcare organization or nursing practice. Write a page paper – Describe any potential challenges or risks that may be inherent in the technologies associated with these trends you described. Then, describe at least one potential benefit and one potential risk associated with data safety, legislation, and patient care for the technologies you described. Next, explain which healthcare technology trends you believe are most promising for impacting healthcare technology in nursing practice and explain why. Write a page paper – Describe whether this promise will contribute to improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, or data management. Be specific and provide examples.

New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.
Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.
In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.
To Prepare:
Review the Resources and reflect on the impact of clinical systems on outcomes and efficiencies within the context of nursing practice and healthcare delivery.
Conduct a search for recent (within the last 5 years) research focused on the application of clinical systems. Campanella et al. (2015) carried out a study to assess the impact of Electronic Health Records on patient outcomes. The study utilized a systematic review and meta-analysis method. It focused on articles from different databases including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge databases. The study identified 23,398, but only 47 articles met the inclusion criteria. The study utilized PRISMA guidelines to carry out systematic reviews and meta-analysis. The study was carried out using a random effects model for the specific indicators identified in nursing care.
The systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that the clinical systems led to improved adherence to set guidelines, it reduced medication errors and adverse drug effects. The findings of the study showed that implementation of clinical systems such as Electronic Health Records can enhance patient outcomes, quality of care, and efficiency of operations. The study did not present any conflict of interest or bias. Therefore, it is evident that the adoption of Electronic Health Records enhances patient outcomes and boosts efficiency (Campanella et al., 2015). For example, Electronic Health Records include Decision Support System that provides a summary of current information for easier decision making. Therefore, the adoption of clinical systems is effective in boosting patient outcomes and operational efficiency.
Hessels, Flynn, Cimiotti, Bakken, and Gershon (2015) carried out a study to examine the relationship between the adoption of Electronic Health Records and adverse effects and hospitalized patients’ satisfaction. The study involved 854,258 adult patients and 7,679 nurses in 70 hospitals in New Jersey in 2006. It involved a secondary analysis of the available data collected using the survey method. The cross-sectional research design was used to analyze conduct the study. The data analysis was carried out using a multiple regression model as well as ordinary least squares.
The research indicated that the adoption of Electronic Health Records reduced the number of patients with a prolonged hospital stay. The clinical system was also effective in reducing the number of readmitted patients. In this study, it was clear that the adoption of Electronic Health Records was associated with patient satisfaction and better patient outcomes. For example, the utilization of Electronic Health Records was sufficient in reducing the rate of death in low mortality cases (Hessels, Flynn, Cimiotti, Bakken & Gershon, 2015). The clinical system was also used to reduce the cases reported on catheter-related infections. The researchers noted that the implementation of Electronic Health Records was only limited by discrepancies in data and accuracy of information gathered from patients.
Hoque, Kumari, Ruseckaite, Romero, and Evans (2016) carried out a systematic review on the impact of clinical registries such as Clinical Quality Registries on health outcomes. The study adopted the PRISMA – P methodology by using specific inclusion and exclusion criteria. The articles were sourced from Cochrane Library, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and CINAHL. The data was collected from 1980 to 2014 and analyzed through multiple regression model. It comprised of case controls, cohorts, and randomized control trials.
The systematic review shows that it is important to establish Clinical Quality Registries since they reduce mortality rates, reduce the cost of treatment and enhance patient outcomes. The study indicated that Clinical Quality Registries were crucial since they helped nurses to appropriately record the data. They were also essential in healthcare procedures since they could enhance the provision of feedback to help nurses boost their quality of patient care (Hoque, Kumari, Ruseckaite, Romero & Evans, 2016). For example, in Sweden, Registry for Ulcer Treatment (RUT), is used to reduce the use of inappropriate antibiotic treatment in hard to heal ulcer treatment. They were also used to enhance safety standards. The study recommended that it was important for nurses to embrace the Clinical Quality Registries in hospitals since they could be used to enhance the quality of care.
Kruse and Beane (2018) carried out a systematic review of health information technology and its positive effect on medical outcomes. The review analyzed the available literature while hypothesizing that the health information technology had a significant positive impact on patient outcomes. The review derived peer-reviewed articles from MEDLINE and CINAHL. It utilized Primary Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis in line with Assessment for Multiple Systematic Reviews. The search in the databases derived 3,636 articles and only 37 were in line with the inclusion criteria.
The review indicated that health information technology had significant positive effects on medical outcomes. However, the study recommended further research in the area of health information technology was necessary since innovative ways were being developed in the industry. For example, the study shows that various countries have developed much interest in the area of health information technology and how it can be used to enhance patient outcomes including the United States, Denmark, Switzerland, and Germany (Kruse and Beane, 2018). The countries are already carrying out national programs to establish how health outcomes can be enhanced using other health technologies such as medical chip cards and Electronic Health Records.
Alotaibi and Federico (2017) carried out a review of the impact of health information technology on patient safety. The focus on patient safety was due to the high rate of contracting hospital-acquired infections or deterioration of a condition. The conditions thus required technologies such as Decision Support Systems or Telehealth to enhance their treatment. The review derived peer-reviewed articles from various databases including EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE. The study reduced the level of bias since it reviewed various peer-reviewed articles. The only articles that were selected included those published until January 2017. The review explored the use of various technologies including Decision Support System, Barcode medication, Electronic sign-out, and hand-off tools, and Electronic Physician Orders or E-Prescription. Other technologies include electronic incident reporting, remote patient monitoring, telemedicine, smart pumps, patient electronic portals, retained surgical items prevention technology, and automated medication dispensing technology.
The findings of the review indicated that electronic medical records were useful in reducing medical errors and thus boosting the general safety of patients. The systematic review indicated that Electronic Physician Orders or E-Prescription was one of the technologies that enhances the highest level of patient safety. It also pointed out that Barcode medication, Electronic sign-out, and hand-off tools and retained surgical items prevention technology were not effective in enhancing safety (Alotaibi and Federico, 2017). However, they were effective in improving the quality of the processes and efficiency while handling patients. Additionally, the review indicated that it was necessary for the technologies to be adopted in healthcare settings since they reduce medical errors, adverse drug reactions and improving compliance with practice guidelines. It is also recommended that hospitals were required to be careful about the technology they should invest in. The reason is that some technologies have limited evidence on the assurance of safety in the treatment of patients.
