Assignment: 300-500 words
Topic: What approach should we (as society/business leaders/government) take to testing autonomous vehicles?
For example: How should we balance the market forces pushing for faster AV adoption with the risks of unnecessary injuries and deaths? If we believe that AVs will ultimately be much safer, should we “volunteer” to be part of the experiments to get there? What regulations should we employ? How should the investment community influence the industry? What do you believe is the current state of safety?
For some context, here are a series of essays by the person I mentioned in class Michael DeKort arguing about the flaws in the “safety driver” approach: https://medium.com/@imispgh. (Links to an external site.)
Michael argues that the approach to testing today won’t work and will cause lots of unnecessary suffering. On the other hand, Elon Musk has been promising fully autonomous vehicles soon, including talking about rolling out a taxi service in 2020 (!) as we discussed in class: https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-network-robotaxi-fleet-details-elon-musk/ (Links to an external site.)
I realize that I’ve asked many questions. You don’t need to answer all of them. You could focus on any of these questions or you could frame the broader question differently and answer that. I’m looking for you to write about your perspective on the safety challenges ahead as AVs roar toward roads near you.
I’m looking for good research, analysis and argument making. Please cite any sources you use
