Nurses at the baccalaureate level in all practice areas are involved in nursing informatics through interaction with information management and patient care technologies. Nurses must not only demonstrate knowledge of and skills in health information and patient care technologies, but also how to use these tools at the bedside and organizational levels. Moreover, nurses need to recognize how information gathered from various health information sources can impact decision making at the national and state regulatory levels.

For this assessment, assume you are a nurse attending a meeting of your state’s nurses’ association. A nurse informaticist conducted a presentation on her role and its impact on positive patient and organizational outcomes in her workplace. You realize that your organization is undergoing many technological changes. You believe this type of role could provide many benefits to your organization.
You decide to pursue proposing a nurse informaticist role in your organization. You speak to your chief nursing officer (CNO) and human resources (HR) manager. These individuals ask you to prepare a 4–5 page evidence-based proposal to support the new role. In this way, they can make an informed decision as to whether the addition of such a role could justify the return on investment (ROI). They need your proposal before an upcoming fiscal meeting.

Recent technological advances have changed the health care industry in important ways, like how care services are given. In the healthcare industry of today, nurses play a key role in making sure that health information technology improves care safety, patient-centered care, and the quality of services (Zadvinskis, Smith & Yen, 2018). The important role is made possible by many things, including the use of nursing informatics, which is the combination of nursing science with the information technology and analytics systems needed to find, explore, manage, and share the data, knowledge, and information needed to support care service delivery (Zadvinskis, Smith & Yen, 2018). Given how important nursing informatics is to how care is given today, this proposal looks at the most important parts of the new technology, how it is used, and what the practitioner’s role is. The main topics are defining nursing informatics, the important role of the nurse informaticist, the professional’s work experience in a healthcare setting, the effect of nursing technology use, and the challenges and opportunities that affect the practitioner’s role (Zadvinskis, Smith & Yen, 2018).
The role of the practitioner in nursing informatics
Informatics in Nursing
The recent rise in the use of information and communication technologies has had a big impact on the healthcare field, including making it easier to use technologies. Electronic medical records (EMRs) and Computerized provider order entry (CPOEs) are two common types of nursing informatics tools used in healthcare. These tools make service delivery easier, faster, and more convenient for both providers and patients. Even though nursing informatics is used by a lot of people, there is some disagreement about how to define it. “Nursing informatics (NI) is the field that combines nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to find, define, manage, and share data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice,” says the American Nurses Association (AMA) (ANA, 2021). Most people agree that nursing informatics is the use of information and communication technologies in medicine to solve a wide range of problems, such as getting people access to health information and improving the health of their communities. As the definition says, nursing informatics looks at different parts of information and communication technology, as well as how care is given. This includes computer science and information science, which help data, knowledge, and information get shared and communicated. Integrating nursing informatics helps with patient care, nurse practice, the work of interprofessional teams, and decisions made by healthcare stakeholders in all settings to improve care outcomes (Zadvinskis, Smith & Yen, 2018).
The Job of a Nurse Informaticist
Nurse informaticists are registered nurses (RNs) who have clinical training and experience. This helps them understand the work environment and workflow of a healthcare organization. The nurse informaticist plays a key role in the delivery of healthcare services. They are responsible for evaluating and choosing the technologies to use, figuring out the needs of end-users, customizing functionality, and making and giving healthcare training (Byrne, 2021). ANA (2021) says that the nurse informaticist’s job has many different functions and responsibilities that require them to work as different experts. The most important things they do are manage projects, do research on how service delivery affects patients and service providers, analyze information and data, and make sure that organizations follow national laws, rules, and standards (ANA, 2021). The nursing informaticist’s roles and responsibilities also include advocating for patients and the organization. They also help shape organizational policies and care standards at the organizational, local, state, federal, regional, and international levels. Also, the nurse informaticist is an important link between the clinical and technical departments and communities during project implementation, staff training, education, and the use of healthcare applications, devices, and systems (Byrne, 2021).
The HCR Home Care Nurse Informaticist
Nursing informatics offers a wide range of nursing skills, develops the interests of nurses, and affects the way a healthcare organization works in every area of clinical practice (Byrne, 2021). The success of an organization’s IT department depends a lot on how well the nurse informaticist and other people involved in providing healthcare services work together and talk to each other. During the interview with Johnson Michael, a nurse informaticist who works for HCR Home Care, a healthcare organization in New York that offers services in people’s homes, During the talk about how important nurse informatics is, Mr. Michael talked about how important his job is to making and using a new electronic medical record (EMR) system. He worked closely with the IT and administration departments to choose the best EMR program based on how well it improved clinical documentation, met local, state, and federal regulations, and helped improve the quality of patient care across the organization. During the few weeks before the EMR system was adopted, she worked together with the different departments. This included training and educating the nursing, administrative, and therapy staff. The training and education helped them get to the level of skill they needed to use the EMR system. This was done in person and online. By learning the skills, knowledge, and expertise needed to use the new EMR program, Mr. Michael made sure he had the knowledge he needed to accept the system and take advantage of its benefits. In order to talk about the problems that could stop the system from being used, he answered questions about how to use the new system, including what the IT, administrative, and nursing departments needed to do next. After the system was put into place, the nurse informaticist met once a week with the department heads and other important staff, such as nurses, office, administrative, and medical staff, to talk about how things were going and any problems that came up. The new system has been in use for three years now, and she continues to provide the organization with the education, training, and support it needs to get the most out of it, depending on its routine and urgent needs (Byrne, 2021).
What will happen to core care services if all nurses use health care technology?
Due to the nurse’s ideal position, she is able to look for and find gaps and problems in the way care is given by finding and using transformative ways to guide her practice, which includes leading projects to improve patient outcomes (Byrne, 2021). The nurse informaticist’s job is important to the organization’s results because adopting supporting technologies improves research, access to information, and communication. This makes patients safer and supports nursing outcomes based on evidence (Byrne, 2021). Automated blood pressure cuffs and electronic medical records are two of the most common tools used to reduce medical mistakes and make nurses more involved and present in patient care. By using the IT system, nurses can now help a larger number of people, even from a distance, because they have adopted these new technologies. More importantly, the systems help them get patients more involved in their care and improve the results of care, which is good for patients.
Healthcare Information That Can’t Be Shared
Full nurse participation in health care technology has the same effect on the security and privacy of patient information, which is a very important aspect of care, especially now that electronic documentation is being used. For example, the widespread use of electronic medical records (EMRs), also known as electronic health records (EHRs), is important for planning patient care, keeping track of services provided, and figuring out how well the process worked. Due to the change from analog to digital information, technology has made it harder for people who shouldn’t have access to protected health information to get it. But the change also brought new risks, like hacking and cybercrime, which are kept in check by new security technologies that have made it easier to protect patient information. To protect patient information, it is the nurse’s job to keep their passwords safe and use double-layer authentication when necessary. Other steps include turning on the settings so that computers automatically log off after a certain amount of time and making sure that computer screens are hidden from people who shouldn’t see them.
The use of IT and the full participation of the nursing staff make care services more efficient and thorough (Byrne, 2021). Electronic charting is a practical application that helps improve workflow. It gives nurses quick and easy access to information, so they can spend more time on patient-centered care, like at the bedside. IT adoption also makes it easier to record and share information. This makes it easier to get needed records and information, like diagnostic results and vital signs, in real time, which speeds up, improves the quality of, and leads to better results from care services (Byrne, 2019). For unit managers, technology improves the performance and efficiency of their staff because it makes it easier to plan work shifts using online self-scheduling platforms.
Investment Costs and Returns
As a way to meet the growing demand for better health care services because of policy changes like the Affordable Care Act of 2010’s directives that give incentives for care to be given in different areas. In light of the changes to the goals, nurses have an important role to play, such as making care organizations more accountable, keeping an eye on quality and financial metrics, and getting better at managing their time (Butler, 2015; Butler, 2015). The costs of care have gone down because of the changes. For example, telehealth was used during the Covid-19 pandemic, and doctors from different healthcare organizations and areas now work together (Jumreornvong et al., 2020). Also, technologies like EMRs improve the planning, design, and optimization of how healthcare technology is used. This has led to both short-term and long-term financial gains.
Chances and Difficulties
The main goal of nursing informatics and using it is to improve the health of patients through better communication and management of information. This is done by giving nurses the chance to improve care delivery, administrative tasks, research, and other areas. Adopting technology can help in a lot of ways, like making administrative tasks easier, making support systems work better, and making healthcare research easier because real-time information is available (Butler, 2015). Also, the platform has systems and functions that make it easier to manage work flow and keep an eye on the environment. Health IT can also help solve some problems. In the past, teams had trouble talking to each other across disciplines because they didn’t have the systems they needed to share information easily and over long distances (Butler, 2015). Telehealth, for example, makes it possible for staff, organizations, and regions to talk to each other and work together (Jumreornvong et al., 2020). The fact that the technology and systems are new makes it hard for practitioners and other groups to work together. This is one of the problems that nurses and healthcare organizations need to solve. The second problem is that patients aren’t always willing or able to use the new platforms to get services. The third challenge is the threat of cybercrime and hacking, which puts privacy and confidentiality at risk. This is a big problem for organizations that use technology instead of paper documentation (Kruse et al., 2017). But healthcare organizations can deal with the problem if they do enough research and make sure the results are good for both patients and organizations.
A Summary of Suggestions
The way nurses do their jobs is changing a lot because technology is changing so quickly. This has helped improve the way healthcare is delivered. The most important change has been the use of nursing informatics, which has had a big effect on how nurses care for patients. Nursing informatics has made nursing and care services better in many ways, such as by improving workflow, coordinating care, and keeping track of a patient’s condition. Even outside of healthcare, people are using technology to help care providers, which has a positive effect on nursing outcomes. The review has shown that nursing informatics is the best way to improve patient outcomes, protect health information, improve the flow of work, and reach organizational goals.
