Symposium Option
Overview: This Race and Police Symposium will feature three distinct parts.
• Part 1 will be delivered by Keynote speaker NYPD Lt. Kishon Hickman. His discussion is titled: Balancing Peacemaking Amid a reforming Criminal justice System
• Part 2 will feature a five person panel presentation on topics related to police reform. The panel will include Central New York NYCLU Director Yusuf Abdul-Qadir, Syracuse Police Chief Kenton Buckner, NYS Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter, Administrator of the Syracuse CRB Ranette Releford and Criminal Justice Professor and Ret. Chief Deputy Dave Wall.
• Part 3 will focus on audience participation / question and answer dialogue.
To complete this assignment please follow these steps.
1. Summarize part one of the symposium. Your written summary should be at least a half of a page
2. Summarize part two of the symposium reflecting you own opinion on each issue discussed. Your summary for part two should be at least a half a page.
3. Discuss what you felt was the most important item covered…explain in detail.
4. Choose one specific area (subtopic) of the discussions and conduct independent additional research. Explain in detail the value or importance of the area you chose and how this area connects to events in society today, use examples, data, and news stories. (3-5 resources suggested)
5. Find a short video (5-10 minutes) related to your subtopic & briefly describe how the video adds to the overall discussion of Race and Police. Also provide the video link.
6. Finally, connect your subtopic to what you have been exposed to in class and discuss the connection.
7. Submit the completed assignment (3-5 pages) in the dropbox on or before May 8th.
