Course work essay

Topic 1 Review the power points on “Sociology of Education” and “The Continuing Struggle for Education” (power points are linked under “Additional Power Points”). NOTE: there are short video links attached to the “Continuing Struggle for Education” – just scroll around the slide content until your cursor changes (to a hand or some other setting you have) as that indicates an active link is present. It may take a few seconds for the video to load. Also, you must be in presentation mode (full screen power point visibility for the video links to be active).

To what extent are various minority groups still encountering obstacles within the U.S. educational system compared to dominant groups?

NOTE: Refer to MISC for Discussion Topic for Grading Rubric (at least 3 posts per topic are required, worth 5 points per topic and evaluation is based on quality of participation per grading rubric).

Topic 2 Discuss school expulsion rates in California compared to those in Kern county and the impact school district policies can have on students (young people’s future). Consider readings on “push out” rates for minority students and readings on educational inequality (for example Reading on, “Segregation, Desegregation and Integration of Chicano Students” and “Race, Ethnicity and Intelligence” by Fischer and there are others on the topic of educational inequality under “Readings”) and the impact “school expulsion” can have on students of low socio-economic status and on students of color (groups that have experienced historical discrimination).

Questions:

1) What disciplinary practices can be put in place to avoid using this nuclear option, that is, expulsion from the school district?

2) Consider the conditions under which expulsion might be necessary and when “discretionary expulsion” is used excessively?

3) What are some possible alternatives methods to discipline students that could better instruct them about constructive behavior and help keep them in school?

FYI: NPR (National Public Radio) had a story on school programs that discipline students at school to keep them in school, rather than suspend or expel them. Here’s a link to get you started…find others and share:

Topic 3

Darling-Hammond, “What Happens to a Dream Deferred?”; under “Readings.”

Discussion Questions:

1) What are the key arguments made by Darling-Hammond about educational inequality?

2) What criteria would you use to determine if a school is providing education that is multicultural?
