Nurses should be aware of the priority health issues affecting children to develop appropriate policies and health promotion teaching strategies. This paper provides a summary of the demographics of children in the United States, priority health issues, and the role of transcultural nursing in influencing policy and children’s health.

Demographics of Children in the United States

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that there are approximately 74 million children under the age of 18 years in the United States, representing 22.6% of the population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). Children of color are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and they are projected to become the majority by 2045 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020). According to the 2020 Census, the ethnic and racial composition of children in the United States is as follows: White (49.9%), Hispanic or Latino (26.7%), Black or African American (13.9%), Asian (5.9%), Two or more races (3.8%), American Indian or Alaska Native (1.1%), and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander (0.6%) (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020).

Socioeconomic Status and Determinants of Health

Socioeconomic status is a significant determinant of children’s health outcomes in the United States. Children from low-income families are more likely to experience adverse health outcomes, such as low birth weight, developmental delays, and chronic illnesses, compared to those from higher-income families (Braveman & Gottlieb, 2014). Children from low-income families are also less likely to have access to quality health care, nutritious foods, safe housing, and recreational facilities, which are critical factors that influence their health outcomes (Braveman & Gottlieb, 2014). Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated health disparities among low-income children, who are more likely to experience disruptions in education, health care, and social services (Patrick et al., 2020).

The priority health issues affecting children in the United States include obesity, mental health disorders, substance abuse, injuries, and infectious diseases such as COVID-19 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS], 2020). Nurses can play a significant role in addressing these health issues by developing policies and implementing evidence-based interventions that promote children’s health. For instance, nurses can advocate for policies that improve access to nutritious foods, physical activity opportunities, and mental health services for children in low-income communities (HHS, 2020). Nurses can also promote policies that increase access to vaccines, prevent injuries, and reduce exposure to environmental toxins (HHS, 2020).
The role of nurses in promoting children’s health extends beyond direct patient care to include policy development, advocacy, and education. Nurses can work with policymakers, community organizations, and other healthcare professionals to promote policies that address the root causes of health disparities among children.
