The Fall of the Byzantine Empire

The Fall of the Byzantine Empire

The Byzantine Empire, the eastern half of the Roman Empire, which survived for a thousand years after the western half had crumbled into various feudal kingdoms, finally fell to Ottoman Turkish onslaughts in 1453. The Ottomans, who had extended their control over virtually all of the Balkans and most of Anatolia, besieged Constantinople for 55 days, using cannon to breach its ancient walls. The fall of the city removed what was once a powerful defense for Christian Europe against Muslim invasion, allowing for uninterrupted Ottoman expansion into eastern Europe. The dwindling Byzantine Empire had been weakened by constant struggles with its Balkan neighbours and Roman Catholic rivals, as well as by several devastating sieges and a population decline. The Schism of 1054 and the Latin occupation of Constantinople in the 13th century had also entrenched a mutual hatred between the Orthodox Byzantines and Roman Catholic Europe, which hindered any effective cooperation against the common enemy.
