Production Processes of Boeing and Airbus
Both Boeing and Airbus have implemented strong production concepts, which seek to expand efficiency and effectiveness. To improve their productivity, Airbus and Boeing are moving their attention from manufacturing to the effective integration and outsourcing of effective design and production elements. The two companies usually possess largely unfilled orders, which frustrate the customers. Nevertheless, the companies have launched the creation of new versions of a narrow airliner, which supports their production capacity and capabilities. Both the production processes of Boeing and Airbus involves the outsourcing of some services needed for the overall production process.
In the production processes, the companies have outsourced the design of the aircraft parts and the management personnel of the suppliers. For instance, Boeing engaged in its outsourcing plan to lower the invest costs and increase the speed of production and research and development. Both companies understand the benefits of outsourcing in supporting their production efficiency and effectiveness (Jeston & Nelis, 2008). It is also essential that the companies have developed new approaches of manufacturing the jetliners. The complexity of the production processes of the jetliners has pushed the companies to adopt new technological processes, which enhances the safety of the aircraft built. However, Boeing appears to be having a higher level of producing the large commercial jetliners than Airbus.
BPM Project
I would recommend the use of the service-oriented architecture (SOA) for Boeing as it helps in expanding the core competencies, integrating the interaction with existing clients and offers new revenue channels for its 787 program. Since the 787 program requires improved process management to deal with the customers and the production processes involved during the manufacturing process. SOA is an effective business process management, which assists in connecting the airline to the customers to support growth. It would also a significant transformation regarding growing the continuous improvement process, which handle the both the internal and external problems facing the airline manufacturers.
SOA will help the company in matching the information services of the company to the diverse needs of the customers. Some of the main services are targeted towards delivering quality materials on the right schedule. It would also improve the quality of the decisions and services at Boeing as it involves the integration of data into information systems, which allows the company to make real-time decisions about the passengers and the production processes of the organization (Jeston & Nelis, 2008). SOA systems are important in improving the brand positioning of the company as it seeks to integrate the different data and applications to develop better processes within the organization. As a result, it is recommendable for Boeing to adopt the SOA business process management to deal with the quality, cost, and supply chain issues for its 787 programs.
Issues in Realize Value Phase
In the realize value phase of the SOA BPM systems, the management of Boeing should be aware of the various potential issues which include effective leadership. The provision of quality leadership is critical in ensuring that the realize value step is completed successfully. Leadership is critical in assessing the project to assess funding and deal with potential liabilities to the project. The lack of employee commitment is another potential issue in the realize value phase of the BPM project (Jeston & Nelis, 2008). SOA will involve changing the existing production and operational systems and thus, requires the commitment and support of the employees. The people in the organization must be willing to change towards embracing the new business processes to support its productivity. For example, the senior executives should ensure that the delegation of the roles and responsibilities is done appropriately to avoid poor performance. Therefore, the realize value phase relies on strong employee commitment and effective leadership to support the implementation of the proposed SOA program at Boeing.
