How is gender represented in the clothing or toys sold in the store?

• For this paper, you will need to visit a store that features clothing or toy departments for children (i.e., Wal-Mart, Target)
• Choose to analyze EITHER the clothing or toy sections (not both) of your chosen store.
• Write a 2-3 page paper that includes the following:
o How is gender represented in the clothing or toys sold in the store?
o What themes do you notice reflected in the clothing/toys you observe (i.e., colors, occupational aspirations, gender roles, etc.)?
o How do your observations fit with the material presented in lecture?
o Do the products you observe seem similar to or different than what you grew up wearing or playing with?
o Were there any toys or articles of clothing that defied gender role expectations? If yes, describe these. If no, what would you have liked to see more of?
o How did the research and theories we have discussed in class relate to your experience (include at least 3 references; one may be your textbook)?
